On the Stability of the Chern Number for 2D Fermionic Topological Phases.

It is well-established that the topological phase of a 2D free fermionic system in the absence of any symmetries is fully characterized by an integer known as the Chern number ν. Based on the effective field theory approach, it is also believed that this number is stable under turning on arbitrarily strong interactions as long as they do not close the gap. In this talk, I will address microscopic arguments showing that this is the case for lattice systems for various values of ν mod 16.
