Leinweber Seminar: Dyon Loops, Axions, and the Symmetries in between. - Marius Kongsore, New York University

Dyon Loops, Axions, and the Symmetries in between.

The axion provides a natural contact point between developments in non-perturbative quantum field theory and particle phenomenology. In this talk, I focus on one aspect of this contact point: an equivalence between dyon loops and instantons. I begin by motivating this equivalence from generalized symmetry and axion mass generation arguments. I then show that loops of Abelian dyons in Euclidean space carry an appropriately quantized Abelian instanton number by explicitly constructing a U(1) dyon loop field configuration. I follow up by providing a UV completion of the Abelian dyon using a non-Abelian gauge theory and show that the dyon loop is effectively a deformation of a standard BPST instanton. I end by providing a few remarks on the phenomenological utility of this construction.
