How does instant messaging work for the theory group?

There are two IM applications set up for the theory group gaim and gabber. gabber is strictly for use with a Jabber server such as im.uchicago.edu. gaim is functional for use with AOL Instant Messanger with plugins for other services. 
  If you would like to contact us using gabber or gaim, launch it and fill out the information in the popups.  The information you will need to know is:
Your CNET ID and Password. Server: im.uchicago.edu Port: 5223 Resource: UofC SSL: ssl is required.
In gabber it will unsuccessfully try to connect just cancel it, then select "Gabber" / "Connection Settings" and click on "Use SSL encryption..."
